About Kundalini Yoga
Welcome to a yoga practice which offers you energy and flexibility, contentment, and creative inspiration.
What to expect from a class.
With its roots in the ancient philosophies of South Asia, Kundalini Yoga is a powerful synthesis of movement, meditation, breathwork, visualisation and the chanting of mantras.
A typical session will involve:
-
‘Tuning in’ chanting specific mantras to begin the practice.
-
These will be followed by breathing exercises and warm up movements and postures to prepare for the main event.
-
The kriya, a sequence of activities which could be postures, dynamic exercises, breathing practices, visualisations and other forms of meditation. There are many, many different kriyas, some for the body, some for the mind, some for the spirit. They bring us very quickly into the present moment and work on all the major systems in the body.
-
After the Kriya there may be an additional meditation
-
And finally, relaxation.
Music is played throughout the session. It supports and uplifts us.
And most of the time we practice with closed eyes. This helps us concentrate on our own experience and enables us to avoid unhelpful comparisons with other people.
How does it work and how does it feel?
Kundalini is brain yoga. It works on your thoughts, your habits, your perceptions. It also works on your nervous system, your endocrine system, your digestion, your cardio vascular system, your muscles, fascia, bones. It is completely holistic. It can be a vigorous workout, a soothing meditation, a soulful means of self-expression, a crazy giggle, all in one session!
Your body will find itself making shapes it hasn’t tried since childhood. Some that it has never tried. But there’s no pressure to perform. This is all about your experience, your own unique physical and mental makeup.
You can feel relaxed, energised, have greater clarity, confidence, strength (both physical and mental). You can feel blissed out or still and calm. Often people leave Kundalini classes saying ‘that was just what I needed!’
